2009 | SOLO SOLO – Elia Cantori
PRIVATE VIEW: Tuesday 13 Oct. 6-8pm
CRISP presents SOLO SOLO – an ongoing exhibition series in which one curator selects one artwork to constitute the entire exhibition. The fifth installment features: Elia Cantori’s COMPRESSED BUILDING (2009) selected by Francesco Stocchi
Deploying all three levels of the gallery space, COMPRESSED BUILDING interacts with the space of the gallery through specific intervention. Unexposed photo paper is left to the artificial light along the floor of the ground (bottom) level and the ceiling of the second (top) level. Conclusively, the created photographs – reminiscent of an airbrush technique – are gathered and exhibited on the floor and ceiling of the first (middle) level, dissecting the studios below and above in which the work was conceived on-site.
Cantori often transforms structures and materials, altering the psychophysical responses of the viewer. By identifying specific architectural sites, unravelling the conditions of their form through a rigorous process of research and considered re-visualisation, COMPRESSED BUILDING follows through with thoughtful photographic and sculptural restructuring.
Elia Cantori (B. 1984) in Ancona, IT, lives and works in London where he is currently obtaining an MFA at Slade University. His first solo show, Amplified Loop, was held at CAR Projects, Bologna (2008). Forthcoming projects include Blinding the Ears – a performative event by the Austrian collective, Gelitin, in Mollino’s Teatro Reggio, Turin. Stocchi is part of Art At Work, a collective with no specific venue where projects are conceived, produced and realised in an ever-changing scenario. Art At Work’s next project, Italian Open, will be hosted at Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam.
