CRISP presents the inauguration of SCULPTURE ROOF.

MARTIN FLETCHER | SYSTEMS HOUSE produces constructions derived from a mixed provenance referencing architectural forms and utilitarian design whilst acknowledging and recomposing elements of contemporary consumer culture. The specific choice of materials and recurrence of modular elements allude to the history of minimal sculpture and aspects of modernism.

The work often refers to elements that shape our everyday experiences within the built environment, from advertising, design and communication systems. The finished piece, despite its seemingly precise technical execution, which limits its level of rapprochement with its geometric austerity, is presented as a proposal or transitional prototype conceived as a solution to certain needs at particular points in time with no claims
on permanence.

The new work, Transportable Transceiver Unit has been specifically conceived for CRISP.  The freestanding ‘tower’ consists of a square steel framework that is painted and simply bolted together to support 16 aluminium ‘shutters’ reminiscent of vertical window blinds or airplane wings.  The cast concrete ‘feet’ anchor the whole work down to the gallery’s roof. The entire structure can be disassembled and ‘flat packed’ in order to move to other locations.

MARTIN FLETCHER lives and works in London and received his MA from Goldsmiths in 2006.  Solo exhibitions include Gallerie S.E., Bergen, in Norway (2008) and Galerie Michael Janssen in Berlin (2007). Group exhibitions include FormContent (2009), Cell Projects and Victoria Miro in London (2008). His work has also been exhibited at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, Barbican, Hayward Gallery and Chisenhale in London.
